- Special Orders
- House rejects extension of unemployment benefits - With Republicans citing concerns about the growing national debt, the House rejected a bill Tuesday to extend unemployment benefits for people who have been out of work for long stretches. (AP)
IN THE SENATE
- The Senate convenes at 9:30am; following any Leader remarks, there will be 2 hours of morning business with senators permitted to speak therein for up to 10 minutes each. Senators will be permitted to pay tribute to Senator Byrd during this period of morning business.
- Following morning business, the Senate will proceed to Executive Session to consider the nomination of David Patreaus to be General. There will be up to 20 minutes for debate equally divided and controlled between Senators Levin and McCain or their designees. Upon the use or yielding back of time, the Senate will proceed to vote on confirmation of the Patreaus nomination (around 12:00 noon).
- Upon disposition of the nomination, the Senate should resume consideration of HR5297, Small Business Jobs bill.
- Additional roll call votes are expected to occur throughout the afternoon and evening in relation to the Small Business Jobs bill and/or Unemployment Insurance/Home Buyer Tax credit extension (House Message on HR4213, Tax Extenders), if an agreement can be reached.
- Byrd to have chamber viewing - The late Robert C. Byrd will make one last visit to his beloved Senate chamber Thursday, when his body will lie in repose in a ritual the Senate has not witnessed in more than 50 years. (Politico)

FEDERAL GRANT OF THE DAY
- NEI Center Core Grants for Vision Research- This program is designed to enhance an institution’s environment and capability to conduct vision research and to facilitate collaborative studies of the visual system and its disorders. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the P30 Center Core Grant mechanism Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. For more information, see NIH.
