IN THE HOUSE

  • The House is not in session.
  • Congress pulled off midterm campaign trail  -  For members occupying vulnerable congressional districts, Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) call to return to Washington next week is likely unwelcome news.  (The Hill)

IN THE SENATE

  • The Senate convenes at 9:30am; following Leader remarks, the Senate will proceed to a period of morning business until 11:00am with the time equally divided and controlled between the two Leaders or their designees.
  • At 11:00am, the Senate will resume consideration of the House Message on HR1586. There will be 20 minutes of post-cloture debate time remaining, with Senators Baucus and DeMint, or their designees, controlling 10 minutes each.
  • At approximately 11:20am, the Senate will proceed to a series of up to 3 roll call votes.
  • Aid package aimed at saving state jobs passes key hurdle in Senate  -  An emergency plan to save the jobs of tens of thousands of public school teachers and other government workers overcame a key Senate hurdle Wednesday, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she would summon lawmakers back from their August break to finish work on the measure.   • Elena Kagan appears assured of becoming next Supreme Court justice  -  A majority of senators declares support for the high court nominee on the second day of debate over her confirmation. A floor vote is likely Thursday. (Los Angeles Times)
  • FDA moves toward tighter oversight of medical devices  -  Makers of X-ray machines, drug pumps and other medical devices would have to submit more safety information to win federal approval under a proposal designed to tighten regulation of thousands of products reviewed each year. (USA Today)
  • Senator eyes bill to rein in for-profit schools  -  The head of the U.S. Senate’s education committee put further pressure on for-profit colleges, vowing new legislation to curb deceptive recruiting practices. (Reuters)
  • Tenn. Primary Action Largely on the GOP Side  -  Tennessee voters are headed to the polls today after an especially active primary season for Congressional races in the Volunteer State. (CQ Politics)
  • Rivals Near Finish Line in Connecticut  -  Days before Tuesday’s Republican primary in Connecticut, Rob Simmons, the once-favorite candidate for U.S. Senate, is spearheading an all-out campaign blitz to remind voters that they can still vote for him. (Wall Street Journal)

FEDERAL GRANT OF THE DAY

  • Add Us In Initiative- The U.S. Department of Labor (“DOL” or “Department”), Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) announces the availability of approximately $2.3 million to fund up to four cooperative agreements.  The objectives of this new initiative, Add Us In, are: 1) to increase the ability of targeted businesses to employ adults and youth with disabilities; 2) to develop and evaluate replicable models, strategies and policies1 that would ensure that youth and adults from targeted populations with disabilities have access to a broader range of employment and mentoring opportunities; and 3) to form and strengthen connections between targeted businesses, diversity-serving organizations, youth-serving organizations and disability-serving organizations, building a national and local network of experts skilled in serving individuals with disabilities. These objectives will be accomplished through the competitive funding of consortia tasked to design, implement, and evaluate innovative systems models that support integrated employment opportunities for people with disabilities within targeted businesses.
