Well, it was no surprise to hear that Ian Lamont has resigned as the publisher of The Signal or as several people around town have said; “He was fired!” There has been a succession of publishers paraded through that paper for the last several years with everyone being summarily canned at some point. Each one just as bombastic as the last and each who seemed to have blinders on to the sea change occurring in the print media business.

None appeared to “get it” and continued to live in the past; talking about ink and paper stock as if the digital age was some fade. And every publisher has continued to use the limitation of print as an excuse as to why something couldn’t be printed especially when they really didn’t to print a submission; too long, too many words; only can select a few letters, etc., etc.

Now that Lamont is gone, will there be another old media person dropped in with grand plans to continue regurgitating what their predecessors have been doing for years? Maybe so, but I surely hope that the owners of The Signal will take a step back and really understand what our community needs; the restoration of the “watchdog” of the valley!

We need a newspaper that actually serves its readership, not some public relations circular for the City of Santa Clarita spoon feeding manufactured spin while suppressing the real story. A bona fide newspaper that represents, informs and investigates for the residents of our entire valley not just a small dictatorial portion of it. That’s what needs to be done before the once venerable local newspaper ultimately folds from the weight of it’s own apathy and incompetence.

I hope that the owners of The Signal talk to a broad spectrum individuals in our valley community and listen, truly listen to some of the local suggestions.
