FROM THE YOU’LL NEVER WORK IN THIS TOWN AGAIN DEPT. — One of Earth’s most beautiful women ever, Elizabeth Taylor died recently. One of our transplanted spies sent along a Life Magazine article about her early movie days. Universal Pictures General Manager Ed Muhl, who ran the mega-studio fired Taylor in the 1950s, noted that she couldn’t act, sing or dance. Ed Muhl passed away about 10 years ago. Since 1948, he owned a large ranch up Bouquet Canyon and lived there full-time since the 1960s. Besides being a top Hollywood mogul, he was Mr. SCV’s father-in-law.

ROCK YOUR SOCKS OFF — That cutey hubba-hubba Barbara Myler is at it again. Her Summit West Management is hosting another Lexus Blues and Jazz Festival. The Friday July 8th series features features Teresa James & The Rhythym Tramps. How good is Teresa? Get this: Bonnie Raitt is her fan. Concert runs 7-9:30 p.m. where it is every Friday night — in front of the Hyatt in Valencia. Lots of food, drink and fun for the entire family. Know this. Everyone who is cool goes there.

RE: THE ABOVE — It’s probably just an unfounded rumor, but we heard that Temple Beth Ami rabbi Mark Blazer is thinking about starting his own Jazz and Blues music fest on Friday nights for grumpy temple members. Yes. It’s called Jews & Blahs…

RE: THE ABOVE — Sorry. We’ll atone.

SO KHTS STATION OWNER CARL GOLDMAN WAS STOPPED AT AN SCV SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT — around one in the morning recently. SCV Sheriff’s Captain Paul Becker asked where the AM mogul was going that time of night. Mon capitan could smell something strong and familiar on the radio exec’s breath and asked where Carly-pie was going at such a late hour. Goldman responded: “I am going to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body.” Capt. Becker then asks, “Really? And who is giving that lecture at this time of night?” Goldman replies, “That would be my wife.”

SPEAKING OF CRIMES & MISDEMEANORS — June’s buzz was the arrest of ex-Chamber membership chair, Traci Pontecorvo, for burglary and drug possession. Tracy Kingery, the new Chamber president-ette, fielded a lot of queries and even some early false rumors that it was TRACY who had been popped by cops. Displaying a wonderful sense of humor, Ms. Kingery laughed and noted to friends: “I’m out on bail!”

WONDER IF THE PRESIDENT WILL PRACTICE WHAT HE PREACHES? — One of our secret wags slipped us this letter to the Commander-in-Chief: Dear President Obama:

I am writing today with a somewhat unusual request. I ask that you return America to its August 20th,1959 borders so that Hawaii is no longer a state and you are no longer a citizen.

Thank you,

Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu

WHO’S SLEEPING WITH WHOM — We have it on good authority that the following SClaritians are sleeping in the same bed together. Wayne & Dianne Crawford; Steve & Julie Sturgeon; Linda & Moe Hafizi; Maria & Mike Murphy; and, Ingrid & TimBen Boydston of Canyon Theatre Guild fame.

OMG! HE’S IN THE AUDIENCE!! — In 1957, “The Music Man” was the toast of Broadway. It later would go on to win a ton of awards and be made in a movie. The Canyon Theatre Guilde (canyontheatre.org or 799-2702 for tickets or schedule) is performing this wonderful family musical. Thought you might get a kick out this one. Back in the early 1960s, Hart High’s drama department put on the play for a couple of weekends. Word got out to its creator, Meredith Willson, who was visiting in Los Angeles. Willson drove all the way out to Newhall to watch the performance. He sat in the 8th row, center and yes, the kids were nervous. From old reviews, MW liked the performance…

WET STREAK CONTINUES — Yup. It rained in June. Seems like The Count is the only one interested that it has rained every month of the year for 2011, all of 2010 and going back to September of 2009 — an unheard of streak now stretching to 33 months. This is the longest stretch of rain in SCV recorded history going back to the 1880s. Cross your fingers that we get some tropical storm for July.

WHEN YOU HAD A SABERTOOTH TIGER FOR A PET? — One of the local SCV Facebook pages is called “You Know You’re Old School SCV When…” Alleged old-timers have added posts like “getting a paper 25 Scorecard” (Ed Bernstein); Bob Gardner (remembering getting Alta Dena milk — DELIVERED!); and Boys & Girls & Mutants Club emir Jim Ventress (“When you rode in the Frontier Days Parade in Canyon Country.”) How about recalling when the folks sat around the campfire speaking in Tataviam? We’re betting that would be a Tom Frew post.

HAVE A HAPPY — Fourth of July. It’s a wonderful country, this America. Hope you have a joyous and free Independence Day.

RE: THE ABOVE — You ever wonder what they do for fireworks in Alaska when the sun never sets? Hmmm. Black lights?

ONE MORE FOURTH — Janice Fryer, misplaced Acton-ette in Caldwell, Idaho, sent this one to The Count. Spotted outside of town was a roadside stand with the sign: “Ill Eagle Fireworks Co.”
