Random Musing: SCOPE capitulates, sets next meeting

Since posting the commentary “Is SCOPE a real organization?” there has been much commenting on the piece mainly from Phil Hof who is affiliated with SCOPE. After my inquiry into when the next SCOPE meeting was to be held and being told that it would be at the end of August, there was no such meeting scheduled. Deciding to write about that and to ask questions the commentary clearly ruffled some feathers.

I was accused of “ascribing all sorts of evil interpretation” to the matter of SCOPE not being forthright in disseminating the information I requested. Well it appears that stirring the pot a little prompted SCOPE to set their next meeting.

The SCOPE website finally posted the information on its next meeting which now isn’t until the end of September. Gee, what happened to the “end of August meeting” I was told would happen? If it was canceled a simple notice of cancellation would have been appropriate.

The organization’s website indicates that their next meeting is now on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 7:00 PM in the reading room at the Barnes and Noble Book Store located at 23630 Valencia Blvd in Valencia. SCOPE will conduct a regular business meeting following the guest speaker.

Phil Hof Says: September 5th, 2011 at 9:41 am Another fantasy. Dave, your blog had nothing whatsoever to do with the timing if either the meeting or the posting on the website. A meeting merely gets delayed, and you fly off with invented speculations about secrecy and question “whether SCOPE is a real organization.” But if you feel significant by taking credit for making SCOPE “capitulate” then go right ahead and public this fiction on your website as you have done here. Feel better? On the other hand, those who know the facts and read the original column know that the tardiness in posting on the web was due to a once-in-a-lifetime convolution of the caring for, and death of a parent, new job, and other factors that seem to have no meaning to you. As is obvious to those who go read the exchange, it wasn’t the meeting issue that ruffled feathers, it was your callously called my delay in updating the website a “pity party” and calling me a liar, and thereby revealed your true character.

admin Says: September 5th, 2011 at 2:02 pm Phil, the excuses that I sighted have nothing to do with your personal life and everything to do with the lack of information on the SCOPE website. You can read whatever you want into it but the bottom line is that there doesn’t seem to be any regular meeting schedule for SCOPE and the site does not appear to be completely up to date. I am only speaking of the organization; you can call me all the names you want and infer whatever you want by twisting the facts but the bottom-line is that the commentary had everything to do with not getting a satisfactory answer to a simple question of where, when and what time was the next SCOPE meeting from the President of SCOPE or the website. If you re-read my commentary it is about when the meetings are and it raised a lot of questions. I think challenging and question an organizations motives is a healthy thing. I’m not always right, no one is, but I do have a right to an opinion and to question information when it does not appear right to me. When I am told that there would be a meeting at the end of August and there isn’t that raises questions. When the SCOPE website shows the last newsletter update as 2009 that also raises questions to me. Posing questions are just that, questions which are being asked because of the lack of information. If the information was up to date then many of the questions being asked might be moot.

Let me try to keep it at a simple level for you: I am the sole person updating the website these days, and since early July my time was pre-occupied with family issues. You may feel I should have walked away from my dad in his last days to update your meeting notice. Of course you can have that opinion. Instructive to hear, actually. I have different values. The sole reason for the lack of meeting notice on the website (since updated, three weeks ahead of the meeting, by the way) was my lack of time to do it. Let me repeat: (1) I am the sole webmaster, and (2) I had more pressing situations to manage. Do you understand these simple facts? Do you grasp this? Are we clear? Crystal? Your questioning the motives of Lynne and the organization reveal your true intention in writing that piece, since you are defending it still, even though the plain-as-day truth about it was posted by me days ago.
