In the midst of catastrophe, we saw American heroes emerge. I reflect often on the efforts of all the remarkable individuals who worked tirelessly to rescue friends and strangers alike. It is clear to me that the true lesson we can take away from that day, is that we can meet any challenge and overcome any personal differences when we unite for the common good. Today in New York City, near Shanksville, PA, in Washington, DC, and all over America, the best of the American spirit is exemplified.
As Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, I have the opportunity to work with men and women of highest character who serve our country to protect all of us at home. It is also my duty to make sure that these brave troops have the resources they need to do their job and return home safely. The ten-year anniversary of September 11th, 2001 is yet another reminder of the emerging threats that our nation faces. The unfortunate reality is that there are still people across the globe seeking to destroy the United States of America. Now, more than ever, we must ensure that our troops have all the equipment, training, leadership, and time that they need to carry out their missions and return home safely.
May we move forward drawing on the lessons learned from those who exemplified courage and compassion in the face of peril. They epitomized selflessness, and on this day of remembrance, let us honor their service and unite in respectful appreciation of their sacrifice.
