(From the ft.com) Americans paused to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11 with tears and tributes on Sunday as President Barack Obama and George W. Bush led sombre ceremonies at the sites of the devastating attacks. Anxiety stoked by warnings of a possible new al-Qaeda strike gave way to outpourings of emotion in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania where nearly 3,000 people were killed by four hijacked airliners.

Mr Obama ended the day by striking an optimistic note, calling in a speech at a memorial concert at the Kennedy Center for Americans to look to the future with “hearts full of hope”.

He said that Americans could “never get back the lives that were lost on that day, or the Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in the wars that followed”.

But “our character as a nation has not changed,” he insisted.

“Our belief in America, born of a timeless ideal that men and women should govern themselves; that all people are created equal and deserve the same freedom to determine their own destiny – that belief, through test and trials, has only been strengthened.”
