(From the-signal.com) Local candidates vying for the 38th Assembly District seat spent much of Tuesday espousing views on a variety of election topics, from calls for unity to stop Cemex mining to disagreements over personal attacks. Debate was under way at noon, when three candidates walked past the posted bronze “Members Only” plaque at the Paseo Club in Valencia to participate in a luncheon forum hosted by the Santa Clarita Republican Women Federated.
About 80 luncheon guests, mostly women, listened to the candidates: Patricia McKeon, wife of Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon; College of the Canyons board Trustee Scott Wilk; and William S. Hart Union High School District board member Paul Strickland, as they responded to more than a dozen questions framed in the language of conservatives.
Questions hinged on popular Republican issues on which each candidate agreed, including: removing regulations that bar offshore drilling; getting tough on illegal immigration; ensuring the Mexican-based mining firm Cemex never starts mining in Soledad Canyon; and halting taxes and dismantling regulations that drive businesses out of California.
