Three congressional candidate forums were held in the past couple weeks and while all candidates where invited, Rep. McKeon did not attend one. McKeon’s three opponents were in attendance at the forums, which were held in Santa Clarita, Palmdale, and Simi Valley.
The Santa Clarita forum hosted by SCV-TV, KHTS 1220, and The Signal was televised. A representative from SCV-TV corresponded with the Congressman’s office and attempted to schedule based on McKeon’s availability. McKeon spokesperson, Bob Haueter, reacted with “surprise” that the forum took place and said that SCV-TV never replied to their requests for a different date. SCV-TV rejected Haueter’s claim and revealed the correspondence with McKeon’s office.
“I’m relieved this is just about the Congressman’s schedule and doesn’t reflect an unwillingness to engage in democratic debate,” Dr. Lee Rogers said. “I understand the Congressman has a busy schedule and we’ve contacted his office with an offer to debate him at a time convenient for him. However, after leaving multiple messages with his scheduler, Washington office, and campaign office, no one has replied to us. We await his call.”
Dr. Lee Rogers is a nationally known podiatrist from Simi Valley who is a published author and speaker on health policy. Rogers is endorsed by the California Democratic Party and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, among other groups.
