Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich has called for a special item at the October 16, 2007 meeting of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to discuss the County’s long term water supply needs.

Supervisor Antonovich’s motion, passed unanimously by the Board last week, directed the Chief Executive Officer to apprise the Board weekly on water proposals being considered the State legislature and directs the Director of Public Works to provide regular reports on water conservation measure implemented by the County.

“Los Angeles County must prepare for various issues that threaten the availability and long-term reliability of our water supply,” said Antonovich.  “These threats include years of on-going drought, increased costs of electricity to transport water into the County from Northern California and the Colorado River, and environmental concerns that may reduce the availability of water through the San Joaquin Delta.”

Governor Schwarzenegger recently called a special session of the Legislature to discuss the matter.  With the State’s population is expected to grow from 37 million to 49 million residents by 2030, water use is expected to increase statewide by 2 to 6 million acre-feet by 2030.
