They’re calling it Central Bark, Santa Clarita’s first off-leash dog park that opens Friday at what is more generally known as Central Park. City parks officials have taken a bite out of the rear side of the sprawling Bouquet Canyon Road park, reserving 1.3 acres for the four-legged set reports the Daily News.

“People have really thought this was something we needed to have,” city Parks Director Rick Gould said Wednesday. “They want a place where their dogs can roam.”

The park is fenced, with places that offer running water and seating areas, Gould said. More dog parks also are planned.

Dog lovers have been lobbying the city for years to create a special fenced park for their pets to play with other dogs unhindered by leashes.

Early this year, the city paid RJM Design Group $182,000 to coordinate community meetings to tap residents’ ideas on what was needed for parks, recreation and open space. A dog park was among residents’ priorities.

The new park actually is an interim site - a permanent park for dogs and their guardians is planned at the city’s Sports Complex in Canyon Country, which is being expanded.
