Skateboarders from across the Santa Clarita Valley plan to attend Tuesday’s City Council meeting to convince city leaders to keep the current skate park open while building a new and improved one. Led by local skateboarders Mike Riederer and Dan Bernardino, the group’s online petition boasts more than 1,200 signatures. Paper versions offer 600 more reports the Daily News.
The group says the city plans to demolish the current skate park in April or May, and a new one wouldn’t be completed until summer 2009, leaving skaters without a site for more than a year.
“There should be no gap,” said Riederer, owner of Hydro Skateboards, a Saugus company that teaches kids how to skateboard.
Rick Gould, Santa Clarita’s parks and recreation director, refutes that timeline.
No date has been set for knocking down the existing skate park, he said, but he estimates it could happen during the summer or later.
And the gap - between demolishing the old park and finishing the new one - could be as short as four months or as long as nine months.
The city is embarking on the fourth phase of its sports complex with a 14-acre expansion adjacent to the activities and aquatic center.
