What is missing
This archive is a record of what survived, not of everything SCV Talk published. Two events destroyed material at the source, before any web crawler could reach it — and what the crawlers did reach, they reached unevenly.
The 2009 database compromise
lots of out-of-date WordPress blogs were hit […] it looks like the hack actually penetrated the database of the old SCVTalk, meaning all 799 posts, 10,000+ comments were affected. Jeff Wilson, “Whoa! This isn’t the SCVTalk I know and love (hate)”, 5 September 2009
SCVTalk and the WordPress blog engine it ran on, has been hacked twice in the last four years. In 2009, the hack was so complete that it forced me to rebuild the site completely. Rider, “And we’re back”, 23 August 2012
785 articles we can name but cannot show
The PHP-Nuke era kept monthly archive listings, and 785 of those listings survive for articles whose own pages do not. We know the exact date and full title of every article below — and, for 50 of them, the opening paragraphs as well.
50 of them now have their opening
The site’s PHP-Nuke RSS feed was captured eleven times between 2006 and 2007, and a feed capture is a different object from a page capture: it carries text. Ten of those captures survive with content, and between them they hold the INTRO field of 50 articles whose own pages were destroyed. This is the first text any of these articles has had here.
They are still lost. The feed carried an article’s intro field, never its body — all twelve content-bearing captures were compared and none was configured for full text. 16 of these openings are provably fragments: the feed itself tells the reader to click through for the rest, or the text stops mid-sentence. The other 34 end on a full stop and may be the whole article, but a feed that emits intros cannot confirm it and the archive does not guess. The trailing punctuation is left exactly as captured, because it is what separates a text that stopped from one that ended. Every one of the 50 stays counted as lost.
Combustion Junction - Newhall Pass on fire
A thirty plus acre blaze broke out Friday afternoon on the east side of Interstate 5 in the Newhall Pass, opposite of the Nazarene Church. 200 firefighters, two Los Angeles County Fire helicopters and one Los Angeles City Fire helicopter battled heat, fatigue, and the fire on a day in which the mercury hit over 105 degrees in Santa Clarita. The blaze was stopped before climbing over a ridge in south Newhall where it may have threatened homes in Hidden Valley. By 6:30pm, the fire was 90 percent contained. No structures were damaged, but two fire crew members were treated for heat exhaustion. Residents of the Sunset Point neighborhood gathered on an overlook on Sagecrest Circle to discuss the fire and reminisce over other environmental threats that have touched this unincorporated area of Santa Clarita. Said longtime SCV resident Gina, "A few years after the 94 quake, there was also a large fire in the hills south of here, but it didn't come as close as the 2003 fire." SCVTalk.com snapped some photographs; to view them.
The evil Day Star
Various weather sites have the temperature in Santa Clarita anywhere from 112 degrees in Canyon Country to 109 degrees in Newhall. It’s bloody hot out there! Judging by the California Independent Systems Operator, power usage across the state is much higher than they anticipated due to the heat. Will there be rolling brownouts? I’ve got a bucket of ice in case there is.
LAFCO Set to Approve Stonecrest Annexation
The LAFCO is set to approve the annexation of the Stonecrest community into the City of Santa Clarita. The annexation is expected to be finalized by the end of next week, and will be the 28 th annexation completed since the city’s inception in 1987. The annexation of the Stonecrest community is considered important to the City as this annexation will create the land bridge necessary to annex the Cemex mine property. The city owns the property rights to the mine site; however, Cemex purchased the mineral rights from the Bureau of Land Management in 1990 for $28 million dollars. If allowed to proceed as planned, the Cemex aggregate mine will be the largest sand and gravel mine ever operated within the United States. to view the rest of this article.
Where maps meet opinion - SCV WikiMapia
So I was browsing the Wikipedia entry on the City of Santa Clarita (check it out and add your own info about Santa Clarita!) and came across a new link. WikiMapia SCV. WikiMapia has no home page, per se, rather the system integrates Google Maps, user comments, and visual cues to show visitors information about locations in a given area. If you click one of the boxes on the SCV WikiMapia, you can see user comments about certain places in Santa Clarita. One user, for instance, thinks Bridgeport is a place where "snooty people who only care about image live." Other users have placed markers denoting famous Santa Clarita landmarks including Mentryville, California's first commercial oil well, and Magic Mountain. One marker describes Towsley Canyon as "A good place for hiking, biking, birdwatching, picture taking, and getting high. Watch out for the ranger though.." Enjoy!
SoCal Edison details potential rolling blackout zones
California may face rolling blackouts today due to the excess heat throughout the state. But how does that affect Santa Clarita? I found some information on So Cal Edison's website . Portions of Santa Clarita residential neighborhoods are next in the list of areas that will have their electricity shut off, should it become necessary. Edison organizes communities in Southern California by groups. Each group is placed on a rotating list of communities that would be shut down should power demand exceed or approach electricity supply. Group 046 includes portions of Valencia and is next on the list. According to the map , neighborhoods west of McBean Parkway, south of Valencia Blvd, east of Rockwell Canyon, and north of Lyons Ave may face rolling blackouts today. This would include the neighborhoods of Wiley Canyon, Valencia Summit, Decoro St, and other areas. Fortunately, it looks as though the energy experts at Cal-ISO are accurate with their predictions of energy consumption today, so maybe we won't have any rolling blackouts.
SCVTalk.com welcomes its first staff writer!
SCVTalk.com is pleased to welcome its first staff writer, Chris Austin of Canyon Country. Chris, a music editing professional, has lived in Santa Clarita for over ten years and in the Los Angeles area for nearly 20 years. Last year, Chris was instrumental in organizing an effort to convince City planning officials to equitably distribute traffic traversing his neighborhood’s streets en route to the new Golden Valley road. Chris coordinated a petition, a letter writing campaign, and conducted research to support his case. Neighborhood residents succeeded in convincing the City Planning Commission reverse its decision. Chris has already submitted a few articles to SCVTalk.com. She will likely write news stories on SCV Politics, land use and development, opinion pieces, and other stories. You can reach Chris by emailing [email protected] or by commenting in one of his stories. Welcome Chris! Edit : Due to some miscommunication, I mistakenly thought Chris was male. She is in fact, female.
A place for Santa Clarita football on the web
James McGoldrick is a passionate fan of Santa Clarita football. From SCV youth Warrior football to Santa Clarita's own semi-pro teams, McGoldrick of Stevenson Ranch enjoys the game so much that he's built a website based entirely on Santa Clarita football. The site, SCVGridiron.com is a labor of love for McGoldrick who works as a sports marketing executive in Los Angeles. It sports news clippings from local newspapers and football websites, original articles written by McGoldrick and other local columnists, photos of passing tournaments, analysis of Foothill League teams, and much more. McGoldrick says the "Grid" has taken on a life of its own since he started it earlier this year. "I can't believe the response," McGoldrick tells me. Even in the off season, SCVGridiron is updated almost daily with the latest news from Summer Passing tournaments, player's health status, and news about SCV Football alumni such as Nate Longshore and Manuel White. SCVGridiron will kick into high gear next month as the Foothill League teams' infamous "Hell Week" begins in earnest leading to the opening of the high school football season in September. Expect McGoldrick and his fellow volunteer writers and photographers to give a fresh, local look into the high octane world of SCV Football. SCVTalk.com interviewed McGoldrick about his site- below to see the interview and some photos from recent passing tournaments and training camps.
Lombardi Ranch Produce Stand Now Open!
The produce stand at Lombardi Ranch is now open, with freshly picked white and yellow corn, vine-ripened tomatoes, and, for right now, a small assortment of other fruits and vegetables. Over the next few weeks, more produce will be added as it ripens, to include cantaloupes, watermelons, and squash, among others. The pumpkin patch will be in operation in October with plenty of family fun for all. Lombardi Ranch is taking sign-ups for the Scarecrow contest with cash prizes awarded for the best scarecrow! It's an especially fun project for kids groups such as scout troops. If you want to enter, your entry form must be received by September 25. Lombardi Ranch is located at 29527 Bouquet Canyon Road. The produce stand is open from 9 to 6, 7 days a week through Thanksgiving.
Do I Really Have It All Wrong, Mr. Bossert?
Mr. Bossert posted his reply on his own blog on July 24 th , entitled " SCVTalk Gets It All Wrong" which was in response to my article, posted here, entitled “West Ranch Annexation – What’s in it for them???” And in his usual style, it is long on emotion and short on factual debate. He calls my rebuttal “seriously flawed”; however, he does not offer his own rebuttal as to why he finds it so flawed, nor does he present any logic or facts to back up his positions. There is one notable exception: I didn’t realize the particular article from which I was quoting from was written by Ron Mechsner. However, Mr. Bossert does not seem to contend that he does not share these views, and other than that, he offers no specifics as to how I have it all wrong. Mr. Bossert then goes on to say: “Chris went on to lay out a typical liberal argument that everyone should be treated the same. It is that same old, “if you get something we have to get too” attitude.” That’s interesting: I didn’t realize that ‘equal treatment under the law’ was considered purely a ‘liberal’ attitude – to me, I think of it as more of a democratic ideal or an “American” attitude. So then, if equal treatment is a ‘typical liberal argument’, then perhaps a typical conservative argument would be: Don’t look to the government for entitlements; everyone pays their own way. I am definitely not saying” if you get something we have to get too”. I am not the one who feels entitled to a payout from the city. I do not have my hand in Mr. Bossert’s (or anyone else’s) pocket. I am not asking for increased services or other ‘perks’. I simply don’t agree with Mr. Bossert’s elitist thinking that he is entitled to receive personal financial gains or increased services either. to
Thank You Buck sign vandalized in Valencia
The controversial "Thank You Buck!" signs have stirred debate in the SCV, but someone, apparently, has taken the debate a little too personally. One of the signs on a paseo bridge between Grannary Square and Del Monte on northbound McBean was edited sometime this weekend or early Monday morning. The vandals removed portions of the letter "B" in Buck's name so that it resembles a letter "F". The vandalism of the sign may be intended to force the City to remove all 14 signs from around the Valley or it may just be an immature prank. Impacting Monday, you heard it here first!
Santa Clarita enjoys a mild weekend outdoors
Enormous fluffy white clouds seemed to hang over the Santa Clarita Valley all weekend, adding to our humidity but insulating us from excessive heat. Even when the sun poked its way out from behind the clouds, a cool breeze cascaded through most parts of the Valley. You could see the effects all over: people worked outside in gardens and garages for the first time in weeks, kids played in their driveways and on the streets, and everyone seemed to have a smile on their face. I took advantage of the temperate conditions and visited Central Park on Sunday to see what was going on. I arrived in time to see an exciting soccer match between two locally sponsored adult teams, some softball action, and more. Of course I snapped some high-speed photographs, and I've selected a few to share with SCVTalk readers. Enjoy.
Poll:Fair to charge non residents more for City recreation programs?
Gail Ortiz, Public Information Officer for the City, detailed plans in an interview with the Signal Sunday to raise recreation fees for non City residents. Residents living outside the "V" of the 5 and 14 Freeways will soon have to pay more to participate in the City's popular recreation programs. Ortiz says it's fair- City residents are essentially subsidizing non City residents, and over 60 percent of participants in the City's recreation programs are from outside the boundaries of the City of Santa Clarita. On the other hand, non resident participants may view this move as blackmail by the City of Santa Clarita- "Join us or pay more for our services" as Leon Worden states in the interview. So what do you think? Click more to read the Poll options and vote.
Dog owners cited for off-leash dogs in new round of Animal Control enforcement
Several Santa Clarita dog owners have been cited in recent weeks by Animal Control officers for allowing their dogs off-leash in local parks. According to Valencia resident Robbie Robinson, two new animal control officers operating out of the Castaic branch of the LA County Animal Care & Control Department have been patrolling local parks and “aggressively” pursuing dog owners. “They drive down the pathway in the park, sometimes recklessly,” Robinson said, referring to Summit Park, the large popular park located behind the YMCA facility on McBean Parkway. to read the rest of this article.
Bouquet Canyon Bridge
Can someone tell me why the city spends the millions of dollars to put a new bridge on Bouquet and it hasn't solved any of the traffic issues from before? You still have to wait in a line all the way back to Newhall Ranch to turn left onto Soledad & the same goes for turning right on to Valencia, although not quite as bad. Why didn't they just finish the darn bridge & put all the lanes in that seems to be in the future. I'm not sure who's future!
West Ranch Annexation and the ''The Dating Game''
Mr. Bossert appears to be Missing In Action for any factual debate on West Ranch annexation. Even though he has acknowledged me by blogging about how I have it all wrong , he has failed to tell me exactly how I have it all wrong. We have even been featured in a Daily News article together , but we have yet to have a debate, computer screen to computer screen. Mr. Bossert's blogsite does not allow for any comments or any other way to contact him. So, my offer still stands: I’m right here, Mr. Bossert, anytime you want to debate the facts. Instead, Mr. Bossert has taken the curious position of posting reruns of his previous blogs on annexation. In a recently posted rerun blog, “ Modern Dating or the Caveman Approach ”, he likens his view of annexation to dating, calling the city’s approach a ‘caveman approach’ when he seems to feel there should be more wooing involved. I guess the city should remember to light candles and bring flowers for Mr. Bossert should they ever meet to discuss annexation again. In another rerun blog, posted on 8/2/06 , he complains about “misrepresented and incomplete information” from pro-annexation supporters. Then, Mr. Bossert goes on to present his own misrepresented and incomplete information. to
The Sky is Falling! Or is it? Real Estate Bubble Facts and Myths
There's been a lot of speculation lately as to the state of the local real estate market. Is the sky falling, or are we just easing into a more normal real estate market? The Santa Clarita real estate market is indeed slowing down, but don't let the raw numbers fool you! Included in those numbers are houses priced way to high for ANY market (like the $950k house in Tesoro that should be more like $750k) and homes that are priced too high in relation to their location and condition (as in trashers backing to busy streets). When looking with serious buyers, there are really not that many houses that are in proper condition to sell. Currently there are about 2200 single-family style homes available for sale in the Santa Clarita Valley, including detached condos and excluding most manufactured homes. I've also excluded the outlying areas such as Acton, Agua Dulce and Lake Hughes from these numbers. Of those 2200 homes, only about 1000 are in the sweet-spot of pricing that most families can afford, which is in the under-$750,000 price range.
Banning Salt-Based Water Softeners
Now that water regulators have moved up the date for Santa Clarita to substantially reduce the amount of chloride (salt) in our waste water, I think it's time that the City and County do something more than just offering a $150 rebate to get those old home water softeners taken out of service. The water district claims that these water softeners create up to 1/3 of the chloride problem in the area. So why not make sure that they get removed? to view the rest of this article.
Rain...in August?
Here in Newhall, we received trace amounts of rain early this morning. A high temperature of only 85 is forecasted for Santa Clarita. Dare I hope that the weather stays this way for the entire month? Normally, August is beastly hot in Santa Clarita.
To Annex or not, that is the question
For those facing this dilemma, the residences of the City truly understand. We too were once unincorporated and part of the county that had to LOOK to the county for our goods and services. (City is in the county) So I guess you need to ask yourself a few questions.
KHTS writes follow up on Vital Express story
KHTS has posted a follow up article to their original July 21st story on Vital Express. KHTS spoke with a number of businesses and individuals in Santa Clarita who worked for and with the high-profile logistics firm. The article also has more detailed information on some of the allegations made in the original piece. Feel free to comment below!
New Construction Slowdown
Word on the streets is that the builders are starting to delay new construction for homes in Plum Canyon. They don't want to risk having standing inventory, so some developments are on indefinite hold at the moment. Don't worry, though... new homes will continue to be built! The stockholders of the major developers don't make money if there's no new construction, so they'll just have to scale back production and pricing a bit (hooray!). If you're looking for a home in the existing new developments, there are deals to be had as builders find themselves stuck with homes as buyers are backing out at the last minute for failure to qualify for their loans. Just be sure that you bring a Realtor with you on your first visit to a new development - it costs you nothing, and there are things that a Realtor can do for you to ease the pain of buying new construction. I can't spill the beans in a public forum like this or the builders will get upset, but there are things that a savvy Realtor can do to save you money in this market.
What is up with the light at Tournament and McBean?
Everyday I head to my job at College of the Canyons from my Newhall area home and I'm forced to wait 3-5 minutes at this light. It's awful! It's always slow to change, even when the traffic on McBean isn't that bad. Doesn't the City have sensors to tell when there are many cars waiting to go onto Rockwell Canyon? Geez!
Free WiFi in the City of Santa Clarita?
The City of Santa Clarita has worked to install 802.11 "WiFi" wireless transceivers on Southern California Edison street lights for the last six months, according to this Daily News article . The City, in partnership with a Bay Area company named MetroFi , "is at kind of a standstill waiting on SCE to make a decision about the streetlights" according to the article. Southern California Edison is concerned about how much electricity the wireless transceivers would consume. As the article notes, numerous California and other US cities have successfully implemented free municipal WiFi services. Judy O'Rourke, author of the article, reports that Pacific Gas and Electric found that the wireless devices use very little electricity. WiFi is the wirless internet standard the world over. A City sponsored WiFi network would establish Santa Clarita as one of California's most forward-thinking cities, giving residents rich & poor access to the vast information contained on the world wide web. Let's all hope that SoCalEdison, the City, and MetroFi can come to an agreement that will allow wide-spread wireless internet access throughout the City.
Nardone's profiled on NBC; Vallarta Market project finally underway?
A popular local Italian deli was featured on KNBC 4 TV in Los Angeles today. Nardone's, located in the Old Orchard Center strip mall at Lyons & Apple streets was profiled as part of a KNBC 4 story on Santa Clarita's nomination as one of the 5 Most Business Friendly cities in Los Angeles County. You can read more about the nomination here . Also, it looks like there is finally some activity at the former Albertson's store and future home of Vallarta Markets at Lyons & Apple street. Vallarta Markets had planned to occupy the facility to the consternation of some Newhall and Valencia residents. A "command" trailer and large container have been placed in the parking lot of the former Albertson's supermarket, and vehicle traffic in and out of the strip mall has increased. Said one local resident, "I hope it opens soon, that shopping center has become an eyesore and I'd like to see what they are going to do with the building." As I remarked in May , I look forward to Vallarta Market opening at the site. Not only will it bring new life to the struggling Old Orchard Center, but it should offer high-quality Latin foods at a reasonable price.
Just a reminder
Since the Daily News article, we've been getting a lot more visitors to the site, 90% of whom access it from within Santa Clarita. Welcome to all the new visitors, and I hope you stay! One feature of the website that is under-utilized is the Restaurant Reviews section . Whether you are a member of the site or not, you can submit a Restaurant Review. My hope is that this site might become a fun and powerful resource for all Santa Clarita residents, and a reader-rated Restaurant review (say that five times) could become central to that. Whether you've had a great dining experience or a poor one, you can submit a review. If others disagree with your review, they can reply with their own rating. There are plenty of Santa Clarita restaurants to write about, so have at it!
The heat is on
Though it won't be nearly as hot as it was in the last week of July, the temperature in the SCV should hit over 100 degrees today. Hope everyone can stay cool!
Henry Mayo confirms closure of TCU
Adam Clark in Friday's Signal writes : After months of speculation, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital officials have confirmed that the hospital's transitional care unit likely will close. Henry Mayo CEO Roger Seaver said he plans to recommend to the board that the unit's 27 beds be converted to acute care status. Though he has yet to determine a time frame, he said the unit would not be converted before the end of 2007. ... The TCU services primarily the elderly community as a skilled nursing facility and a stepping stone for patients who are too healthy to occupy a regular hospital bed, but too sick to go home. As the artilce notes, Brad Berens of the SCV Senior Center is very dissapointed in the development. The closure confirms information provided by an anonymous source to SCVTalk.com in early June. You can read that article here.
City mails pre-made Cemex postcards to SCV residents
The City has followed up on its controversial "Thank You Buck!" signs by mailing postcards to residents of the Santa Clarita Valley. The card, which contains the standard boiler-plate information on the Cemex Mine and its potential effects on the SCV, has four detachable, pre-paid postcards addressed to Representative McKeon, Senators Boxer and Feinstein and the City of Santa Clarita Public information office. Residents are encouraged to input some information on the post cards and mail them to each government official in support of McKeon's HR 5471. The City says it has already received thousands of responses. Do you think the mailing will make a difference? Vote now in the poll in the right column of the home page.
Daily News launches new community journalism website that covers SCV
The Daily News launched a new participatory journalism website today. The site, www.valleynews.com gives readers a chance to become citizen journalists and write stories about their neighborhoods, sports, family activities and other items. Select stories will appear in a print edition of Valley News and will be distributed with the Daily News newspaper. The Daily News says it is 'blazing a new trail' in journalism. Sound familiar? The concept of citizen or community journalism is the foundation of SCVTalk.com. The key component of this website and others like it is reader participation. Readers are invited to comment or submit news items, vote in online polls, and discuss topics in a forum. The success or failure of any community journalism website depends on how many participants actually care to post their ideas and thoughts about a given topic. In that regard, the ValleyNews.com website will have an advantage over other such sites simply because it will be massively publicized by the parent newspaper, Daily News. Eyeballs on the newspaper will translate into visits to the website, and a percentage of those visitors may write articles about Santa Clarita.
The Signal interviews Pitchess Detention Center Commander
The editors of the Signal made an excellent choice for Newsmaker of the Week on Sunday. Commander Don Rodriguez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department heads the massive Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic. The in-depth interview revealed some surprising facts: ...if you are convicted of a misdemeanor and you're sentenced to county jail, you're going to serve 10 percent of your time. We just don't have the room. ...because of our issue about not having enough bed space available for them [inmates], they do 10 percent of that time. If you are sentenced to 364 days in a county jail, you'll do 36.4 days, and then you will be released. Commander Rodriguez spoke at length about the facility's Escape notification system, inmate fighting and violence, hospital treatment of inmates, expansion of the facility, and the rural roots of the County jail. Do you ever worry about escaped inmates from the Pitchess Detention Center? I remember several high profile escapes in the late 1990s, but I'm not aware of any lately. If you so desire, you can have a look at the facility and its unimaginative roads names by clicking here .

What's being built near Magic Mountain?
An SCVTalk.com reader emailed me the following question: " Just curious if you know what is being built near Magic Mountain? There seems to be a lot of land being cleared, construction vehicles, etc. Any idea what is going on there and where I can find more info?" I know someone has been grading and shaping the land just east of the theme park's parking lot for several months now. The site is far enough away from the park that I don't think Six Flags is planning on an expansion for the park (especially with their recent money woes), so what, exactly is going there? A search of the Signal's new website yielded few clues. Thoughts?
Power outage near Henry 'Hold the' Mayo hospital?
On my lunch hour, I noticed several So Cal Edison trucks at the corner of McBean/Old Orchard and McBean/Avenida Nevarre. The light at McBean/Old Orchard wasn't functioning. Funny- last week the light further south on Old Orchard was out. Are they doing planned maintenance? P.S. Thanks to John Boston for the food reference in the title of this post.
The Local Group- Astronomy Club to hold star party this Saturday
The Local Group Astronomy Club will host a star party at Vazquez Rocks in Agua Dulce on Saturday, August 26 beginning at 2pm. Details below. 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM: Special telescopes will provide safe views of Earth’s nearest star - Sol. 8:30 PM to 11:30 PM: As the sky begins to darken, telescopes will begin showing the Moon , Jupiter, and stars in ones and twos and bunches – some in color. With full darkness, telescopes display the wonders of the “summer” sky: Cygnus the Swan, Hercules the Hero, the Scorpion, and the Teapot – plus Neptune and (later in the evening) maybe Uranus! “Deep-Sky” objects will include: clusters containing stars too numerous to count; the “luminous vacuum” of the Bridal Veil Nebula (left behind by a supernova thousands of years ago); and the “Swan” Nebula - or is it Ernie’s Rubber Duckie? The Local Group has been educating and guiding Santa Clarita amatuer space explorers for years. Be sure to check out their new and improved website . I will attend the star party and make my first foray into the art and science of astro-photography . With any luck, I'll have a nice article on Sunday with some fantastic pictures.

College of the Canyons Expansion Underway
College of the Canyons is expanding, with two new buildings currently under construction, and grading begun for a second campus in Canyon Country. Initially designed for a student population of 5,000, College of the Canyons has a current enrollment of over 18,000 students. In order to accomodate this increase in students, COC has held classes off-campus, as well as adding portable classrooms. to read more about expansion at COC and the new Canyon Country campus.
Santa Clarita Sheriff's Deputies shoot, kill suspect on Sierra Highway
On Monday, August 28th at around a quarter after 9pm, LA County Sheriff's Deputies shot and killed an armed domestic violence suspect around the 25500 block of Sierra Highway. The suspect, Andres Garcia, 58 of Canyon Country, reportedly threatened his former girlfriend and her husband with what turned out to be a large BB gun. The woman and her husband fled the scene and reported the details to Deputies who then approached Garcia at the couple's home on Sierra Highway. to view the rest of this story.
Are The Greens up for sale?
I'm copying this question from another board: Newhall Land & Farming has signs posted on the corner of McBean and Valencia to sell a huge parcel of land. One of the signs is situated on Valencia Blvd behind the bus terminal but the other is situated on the Greens so that it can be seen from McBean. I'm hoping that this is just a convenient location and the Greens is not part of the deal, but who knows? Does anyone have any information? My guess is that the city will probably approve about 2000 apartments in that spot so I am a bit concerned that this intersection will become just that much worse.
Missing Cow?
Is anyone from the area around the Placerita Cyn fire missing a young cow? There is a dead (unfortunately) black & white one lying on the East side of The Old Road between the 14 offramp and Sierra Highway.
Canyon rolls past Moorpark; Hart, Valencia set to play tonight
Defending CIF champions Canyon defeated the Moorpark Musketeers Thursday evening 33-14. Canyon looked strong, despite two interceptions by quarterback Ben Longshore. Canyon back JJ DiLuigi had a total of 148 rushing yards and one touchdown in the opening game of the Foothill League and 2006 season. In other Foothill news, Hart will face-off against Ventura powerhouse St. Bonaventure tonight at College of the Canyons. Hart has lost the last three matches against St. Bonnie, but may have an edge tonight as the Seraphs start sophomore quarterback Anthony MacArena. Also, Valencia will play Corona Centennial in what is sure to be a game filled with spectacular rushing by standout Valencia runner Shane Vereen. The game will be played at Valencia High School. Be sure to check out the Signal's 2006 High School football preview for some excellent reporting on all Santa Clarita teams. Thoughts on the 2006 season? Post below. Registration no longer required.
Cemex and the City: Between a Rock and a Hard Place, Part 2
Cemex issued a press release earlier this month intended to refute the information given by the City of Santa Clarita regarding the proposed Cemex mine in Soledad Canyon. Susana Duarte, VP of Communications and Community Relations of Cemex, stated, “Cemex will provide straight talk, not misinformation about the project. We are mailing information to residents and creating a special mini-Web site to provide facts about the project. Our goal is to make sure residents can make informed and educated decisions regarding this project that are based on facts that have been verified by numerous studies, officials, and authorities.” to
LA Times covers Cemex war
The Los Angeles Times has a decent article on the City's continuing battle with Cemex over proposed plans for a 69 million ton mine in Soledad Canyon. The writer spoke with Laurene Weste, Gail Ortiz, a resident of Stonecrest, and a Cemex official. The article is fair to both sides and echoes Chris' earlier articles on the history of the site, the City's campaign against Cemex, and the need for aggregate materials for the continued expansion of Southern California. I would have liked to have seen some coverage of the health issues.
Source: Golden Valley JV football schedule canceled for rest of season
The troubled Golden Valley Grizzlies football program has suffered another setback. Thursday’s Signal reports that the junior varsity squad had to cancel tonight’s matchup with the Saugus Centurions, but a source familiar with Santa Clarita high school football tells SCVTalk that the junior varsity squad’s entire season has been canceled. “They need players for varsity,” the source said, “so they’ve moved all JV players up to varsity and canceled the rest of the JV season.” The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, works in the athletic program of an area high school.
Cemex Update: National Alliance Formed
Reflecting mounting opposition by citizens’ groups and government agencies in at least five states across the nation, a number of local community organizations and city interests have formed a National Alliance to fight multinational giant CEMEX and its mining operations across the United States. This first of its kind national alliance is comprised of active citizens groups from Colorado, California, Ohio, Florida and Michigan that have formed to fight unlawful or dangerous activities at CEMEX operations in their communities. to view the rest of this press release.
Astronomy Club to hold last star party of season on Saturday, Oct. 28
Santa Clarita's own astronomy club, the Local Group , will host a public star party at Vazquez Rocks on Saturday October 28 from 2 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The event is free for all participants, though you are asked to shut your car's headlights off if you arrive after dark. Steve Petzold, a member of the group, tells SCVTalk that there is a chance Comet Swan will be visible during the party, along with an Iridium Flare at 7:33 p.m., a spectacular flash of sunlight off an Iridium communications satellite in orbit above the earth. Star trekkers will also have the opportunity to view the Swan Nebula, globular clusters, the waxing half moon, and the aptly named Cosmic Cheerio. This is the Local Group's last public star party of the year. If you're worried that the kids will be up too late, keep in mind they'll get an extra hour of sleep this weekend! If that's not enough to convince you to go, check out some of the amazing pictures submitted by an LG SCV member when SCVTalk covered the group's last star party in August. Clear Skies!
Spymaster Darryl Manzer caught in West Ranch!
Fresh off his secret military assignment in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, globetrotting Virginia based SCV spymaster Darryl Manzer was spotted by an alert SCVTalk.com author on Thursday scouting his old stomping grounds in Mentryville. "I was enjoying some warm October breezes and clear skies in Mentryville, Santa Clarita's ghost town, when who should I spot but Darryl "Da Mayor" Manzer?" said Chris Austin, SCVTalk author. Witnesses reported that Manzer was seen touring Mentryville with proud new daddy Jack Murphy, former City Council Candidate and blogger at the West Ranch Beacon. "Hey, is this thing on?" Murphy asked while fiddling with his camera, just as he accidentally took a photograph of his nostrils.
Make Your Vote Count on November 7th!
On November 7th, local voters will go to the polls to decide many issues. One of the most important votes residents will make that will affect the economic health of the SCV is Measure M. In a recent speech to the Economic Club of America , U. S. Secretary of Labor, Elaine Chao noted the growing mismatch between the new jobs being created and the skills of our nation’s workforce. “Some of the strongest demand is for workers with 2-year degrees in specialized fields from community colleges”, she said. Ms. Chao also noted that “it is more important than ever before for workers to complete their education and keep their skills current”. COC provides this much needed job training right here in the SCV and at a price most people can afford. to read the rest of this article.
SCV residents encourage voters in New York
As the deluge of political mailers, advertisements, and phone calls approaches its climax in advance of the November 7 election, a group of Santa Clarita residents gathered at a Valencia home Saturday to call strangers and encourage them to vote. Santa Clarita may be overwhelmingly Republican and considered a safe district for state legislative seats and Congress, but that didn’t stop the group of determined volunteer Democrats from encouraging people in the Catskill mountains of New York’s 19th Congressional District to vote for a Democratic challenger to a House Republican incumbent.
Increased Parks & Rec Fees and Billion Dollar Surpluses!
Beginning with the winter Seasons brochure, the City of Santa Clarita’s Parks and Recreation Department will now be charging residents of the unincorporated county area higher rates for participation in city-subsidized sports and recreation programs. Bob Haueter, a senior deputy for Supervisor Antonivich condemned the city’s decision in a Daily News Article published 10/22/06, stating “Supervisor (Michael D.) Antonovich has said he does not believe this is something the city should do”. to read the rest of this article.

44 images with no surviving copy
Every image referenced by a post was chased through the live CDN and the Wayback Machine, and the result of every chase is recorded. Of 450 candidates, 9 turned out not to be images at all — trackers, spacers and layout endpoints — and of the 441 real ones, 397 were recovered and 44 were found in no capture anyone holds. That is a recovery rate of 90%.
The 44 that remain render as a short note naming the original file, so the gap is visible rather than silent. This accounting is read from the recovery manifest on every build: an image moves out of this number the moment a pass recovers it, and no figure here is typed by hand.
What was recovered since the last accounting
Losses are not static. 82 WordPress-era posts — most of them from 2011 and 2012, where our captures are thinnest — survive only because they were imported into the santaclarita.com host when the blog moved, and were recovered from there. For most of them no capture of the original WordPress page exists at all.
The forums
SCV Talk ran discussion forums alongside the blog, and their record did not survive in usable form. Public web archives hold about an eighth of the threads, and most of what they hold falls in a single year — enough to prove the forums existed and to show what they looked like, not enough to present as a record of the discussion. They are documented here as a loss rather than published as a fragment.
Comments that existed but were not captured
The 2007–2008 v2a discussions existed and are missing. Every surviving v2a post page prints its own comment count in its header (“… with 140 comments”), and not one capture of that era contains the comment section itself. The counts are the evidence: the discussions happened, and the crawler brought back the article without them. Blogger-era comments lived in a separate frame the crawlers never captured with the posts, and that recovery has now been attempted and closed. Blogger served comments through an embedded frame (comment.g) rather than in the post page, and no capture of that frame survives on any host. What Blogger also served was an Atom comment feed, and those feeds were swept: 423 logged queries — 308 against the Wayback index, 115 across six Common Crawl indexes — over both blogspot addresses, both custom domains and the Blogger feed host, of which 393 returned nothing. Nineteen comment feeds were recovered and parsed; sixteen carried no entries at all, and the blog-wide feed states its own total: five. Those five comments are published, on On Industrial Design & Snobbery, attested by captures of both hosts. Every other Blogger-era comment is recorded here as a loss, on the evidence of the sweep rather than on the absence of a search.
Pages usually state their own comment count, so where a capture shows the count but not the comments, the loss can be measured rather than assumed. A count is read only from a post’s own page and only once per post, however many times that post was captured; month archives and category listings repeat the same line for a post that has already been counted, so they are ignored. A claim is a floor, not a ceiling — it records the comments a post had on the day it was captured, and posts never captured state nothing at all.

How to read absence
Absence from this archive is evidence of capture gaps, not absence from the site. If a writer or commenter appears in some years and not others, that reflects which pages were captured — not when they were active.
