About this collection
The West Ranch Beacon. 3,224 records, 1,410 comments, published here with the permission of the paper’s founder.
What it was
A Santa Clarita Valley community blog, self-described on its own masthead as “News & Commentary for the Santa Clarita Valley”. It launched as a blog in the autumn of 2005 and covered the valley’s public life — the town council, annexation, water, the mine, and the arguments underneath them — alongside named columns and a comment section its writers used as much as its readers.
On what basis this is published
Permission from the founder. Dave Bossert, founder of the West Ranch Beacon and principal of Madison Beach Productions — the entity named as Licensor in the paper’s own copyright notice — gave permission to publish for historical purposes.
The paper’s copyright notice, captured eight times between 2007 and 2011, is a restriction notice rather than a licence: it tells a reader to obtain permission and never states what permission would cover. It distinguishes Original Author from Licensor and treats contributions as separate works. That distinction is recorded rather than resolved, and any author may ask for their own work to be removed or corrected.
Two names, two platforms, one publication
The run does not end where this collection does. What is published here is the West Ranch Beacon era, 2005–2013. The paper continued afterwards as The SCV Beacon from 2016, and the archive holds 588 further records from 2013 to 2018 that it does not publish, because whether this library has standing to publish them is not established. They are censused and held, not lost.
The two eras ran on different software, which is invisible because the site kept looking like itself:
- West Ranch Beacon, 2005–2013 — WordPress, six versions from 2.0.2 to 3.5.1 across 7,050 generator tags, wrapped in a hand-built theme: a 963-pixel table layout, a GIF image-map for navigation, and a masthead the theme rotated by season.
- The SCV Beacon, 2016–2018 — not WordPress. A hand-built template, identified from 936 of 939 captures carrying its own stylesheet and jQuery where only five carry WordPress theme markup.
How attribution works here
Most of this collection was published under a single site account. Where a named column identifies its writer, the archive supplies the name — and says so, and says from what. The as-published byline is never overwritten.
- 299 records carry a writer supplied by the archive, across 8 columns. The strongest evidence is the paper’s own navigation, which names its columns on the last page it ever served.
- 161 records carry a byline the page itself printed.
- 2,761 records carry the site account “admin”, which is a login rather than a person and is never resolved to one.
Some columns are titles rather than people, and one is a republication feature. Those are labelled as what they are rather than given an author. Pseudonymous columns are left exactly as published and no attempt is made to identify who wrote them. The author census shows all of it.
The comment threads
1,410 comments are published as they appeared, 1,410 of them carrying the name the commenter posted under. Handles are shown as published and are never merged: two spellings of a name are counted as two, because deciding they are one person is an inference this archive has not been given.
What is missing
406 captures hold no article at all and are excluded and counted. 657 images the posts reference have no capture the archive has located. And there is no farewell in anything held — the paper stops mid-stream. What is missing sets all of it out.
