A Canyon Country woman, who ran a red light while coming off a methamphetamine binge, killing a 70-year-old Salvadoran man in town to visit relatives, was sentenced Thursday to nine years in state prison reports the Daily News.
San Fernando Superior Court Judge Harvey Giss imposed the maximum term allowed under Julia O’Connor’s Feb. 15 guilty plea to vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of methamphetamine, according to Deputy District Attorney Heather Borden.
O’Connor red a red light — witnesses estimated that she was going between 50 and 75 mph in a 35 mph zone — and struck Jose E. Ortiz as he was crossing Glenoaks Boulevard and Polk Street in Sylmar after buying a newspaper last May 24.
