  • Afghan Aid on Hold as Corruption Is Probed  -  The chairwoman of the House subcommittee responsible for foreign aid said she was stripping from pending legislation $3.9 billion in funding for Afghanistan following revelations that billions of dollars, including large amounts of U.S. aid funds, were flowing out of the country through Kabul’s main airport. IN THE SENATE

  • The Senate convenes at 10:00am; following any Leader remarks, there will be a period of morning business for 1 hour with senators permitted to speak therein for up to 10 minutes each. The Majority will control the first 30 minutes and the Republicans will control the next 30 minutes.
  • Following morning business, the Senate will resume the motion to proceed to HR5297, the Small Business Jobs bill.
  • The Senate will recess from 12:30 until 2:15pm to allow for the weekly caucus luncheons.
  • At 2:15pm, the Senate will proceed to vote on the motion to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to the Small Business Jobs bill.
  • Byrd’s death could delay financial reform vote  -  A tax on large institutions, added late to the bill, irks GOP supporters whose votes are needed to avoid a filibuster in the Senate. (Los Angeles Times)

  • Lame-Duck Session Emerges as Possibility for Climate Bill Conference  -  What Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) puts in the Senate climate and energy bill, and what gets added on the floor, may not matter as much as simply whether some bill passes. (New York Times)
  • Top court extends gun rights to states, cities  -  The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday extended gun rights to every state and city in the nation in a ruling likely to spur new challenges to gun control measures across the United States. (Reuters)
  • States struggle to pass budgets without stimulus  -  For at least 30 cash-strapped states counting on federal stimulus money, the news was a stunning blow: A deficit-weary Congress had rejected billions in additional aid, forcing lawmakers into a mad scramble to balance their budgets. (AP)
  • Obama calls for dramatic expansion of wireless spectrum  -  Putting presidential muscle behind an effort to avert a logjam in wireless communications, President Barack Obama on Monday directed the federal government to nearly double the nation’s broadband spectrum capacity over the next decade. (San Jose Mercury News)
  • In Nevada, Running for Senate and From Cameras  -  There is a game in Nevada called “Where’s Sharron Angle?” that the press is tired of playing. (New York Times)

  • June 29, 1613- On this day, The original Globe Theatre in London burned to the ground after a cannon employed for special effects misfired during a performance of William Shakespeare’s Henry VIII and ignited the theatre’s roof.
