IN THE HOUSE

  • On Thursday, the House will meet at 10:00 a.m. for legislative business.
  • House Passes Bill to Help With 9/11 Health Care  -  The House approved legislation on Wednesday that would provide billions of dollars for medical treatment to rescue workers and residents of New York City who suffered illnesses from breathing in toxic fumes, dust and smoke from ground zero. (New York Times)

IN THE SENATE

  • The Senate is in pro-forma session until November 12, 2010.
  • Senate passes bill to keep government running through Dec.  -  The Senate easily passed a bill on a 69-30 vote Wednesday night to keep the government running through early December, sending the measure to House where it is expected to pass.  (The Hill)

 OTHER NEWS

  • Deficit-cut panel vows tough choices  -  A U.S. commission looking for ways to balance the federal budget talked tough about fiscal discipline at its fifth meeting on Wednesday, but hard decisions were not expected until after the November 2 elections. (Reuters)
  • Congress hands off tax cut issue to campaign trail  -  Lawmakers fail to make a decision on whether to extend Bush-era tax breaks. The matter will be carried to candidate’s home states before the midterm election. (Los Angeles Times)
  • Congress backs Obama plan on NASA’s future  -  Congress approved a blueprint for NASA’s future Wednesday that extends the life of the space shuttle program for a year while backing President Barack Obama’s intent to use commercial carriers to lift humans into near-Earth space. (AP)
  •  Liberal coalition looks to re-energize voters with D.C. rally  -  Laid-off New York City transit worker Sabrina Greenwood plans to march Saturday in Washington, D.C., for people like her who have lost their jobs in the recession. (USA Today) 
  • In Iowa, a Skeptical Audience Greets Obama  -  President Obama returned Wednesday to the state that put him on the presidential map, this time fighting to keep his Democratic Party in power and confronting skeptics who challenged him on his policies, from tax cuts to health care to the war in Iraq. (New York Times)

FEDERAL GRANT OF THE DAY

  • Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program- This program supports projects to develop faculty and library leaders, to recruit and educate the next generation of librarians, to conduct research on the library profession, and to support early career research on any area of library and information science by tenure-track, untenured faculty in graduate schools of library and information science. It also supports projects to attract high school and college students to consider careers in libraries, to build institutional capacity in graduate schools of library and information science, and to assist in the professional development of librarians and library staff.  For more information, see IMLS.
