The Board of Supervisors approved the allocation of $1 million for the purchase of 842 acres of open space at Elsmere Canyon, announced Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich. “The acquisition of the 842 acres in Elsmere Canyon will provide vital connections for wildlife movement and trail networks between the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys,” said Antonovich.  “This vital acreage, which was originally to become a landfill, will now be preserved for future generations.”

Elsmere Canyon environmentally sensitive area, home to:

  • 12 natural waterfalls
  • An old fossil field
  • Native American artifacts dating to 450 A.D.
  • 20 endangered species
  • and more than 8,000 trees

Located adjacent to the city of Santa Clarita, the open space lays the foundation for a network of trails that reaches from the Pacific Ocean in Ventura County to the Angeles National Forest in Los Angeles County.
