In addition to receiving the Award of Excellence in the Park Planning and Design Category for Discovery Park, the City of Santa Clarita was the recipient of the exclusive Creating Community Award of Distinction at the recent California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS) conference in Sacramento. Chosen from a pool of 42 Award of Excellence recipients from various award categories, Santa Clarita was selected for this highest honor for its planning and design of Discovery Park.

“The City of Santa Clarita is thrilled to be chosen as the recipient of this prestigious award,” commented Mayor Marsha McLean. “This top honor is an affirmation of the City’s ongoing commitment to encouraging cultural unity through recreational experiences and promoting health and wellness throughout the community.”

The Creating Community Award of Distinction is an exclusive honor awarded by CPRS to the community that best displays significant efforts to influence and improve the quality of their community within the vision of creating parks, recreation and community services.

Discovery Park was completed and opened to the public in July 2010. The park’s unique design minimizes storm water runoff, enhances existing wetlands, improves wildlife habitat and biodiversity, and offers distinctive educational opportunities for visitors. The site also includes a bike trail connection as part of the City’s dedication towards active, healthy living.
