The City of Santa Clarita and the SCV Family of Water Suppliers are proud to host the 2011 Earth Arbor Day Festival at Central Park on Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This popular, FREE community event will feature a host of family-friendly activities designed to teach guests of all ages and environmental awareness levels about the planet in a dynamic way.

“The City of Santa Clarita is proud to promote eco-friendly living practices throughout the community,” commented Mayor Marsha McLean. “The Earth Arbor Day Festival is an opportunity to provide residents with the knowledge and tools necessary to make a positive change in the environment by going “green” in their everyday lives.”

The Earth Arbor Day Festival will feature six interactive zones, great live entertainment, demonstrations, and hands-on activities the whole family can enjoy. There will be displays from eco-minded vendors and live music from nearly a dozen local singer/songwriters in the genres of folk, alternative, pop, indie, reggae, swing, rockabilly and more.

The Earth Arbor Day Festival features a variety of six interactive green-friendly zones. Kids will get a kick out of the Children’s Zone offering, hands-on activities, displays, games, ladybugs to help control tree and garden pests, and entertainment, including a rock climbing wall, bungee jumping cables and a giant inflatable slide.

Back by popular demand, professional solar carving artist Brian Chandler, known as Solar B, returns to the festival to to help particpants learn how to carve intricate designs into pieces of wood with a concentrated beam of light created by the sun and a magnifying glass.

Browse a variety of green and environmentally friendly products and services, including clothing, food products, toys, home furnishings, healthy living products, and more in the Eco Zone.

Check out sleek green vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells, bio-diesel, ethanol, and compressed natural gas at the Alternative Transportation Zone. The Energy Zone, will offer tips on how to reduce energy use and lower utility bills, in addition to a live solar oven cooking demonstration. The Water Conservation Zone will feature information about water conservation and demonstrations to illustrate its global impact. Head over to the event’s Tree Zone to pick up free trees and bags of mulch.

The City is also striving to make this year’s Earth Day Festival and 22nd annual Arbor Celebration a Zero Waste Event. Volunteers will be on-hand to direct guests to the appropriate recycle and compost bins, thereby minimizing the need for trash cans.

Presenting sponsor the SCV Family of Water Suppliers be holding free eco-friendly workshops during the Festival at the Castaic Lake Water Agency. Workshops will be hosted from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., to teach visitors about watering saving techniques, landscape design, native friendly plants, water-efficient irrigation systems, environmental ways to control pests, and more. Trolley transportation to the Castaic Lake Water Agency will be provided for free. The pick-up and drop-off location is at Central Park.
