“To alleviate congestion, encourage carpooling, improve air quality, reduce noise, and reduce traffic, this vital $57.8 million project will provide a High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane in each direction along the I-5 Golden State Freeway between SR-134 and Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank, a total distance of 5.4 miles — 2.7 miles in each direction,” said Los Angeles County Mayor Michael D. Antonovich.

The project will be completed by winter 2014.

Statistics on HOV lanes:

  • Los Angeles County has 485 HOV lane miles or 34% of the total 1,410 HOV lane miles in the State of California.
  • On average, each HOV facility in Los Angeles County carries 1300 vehicles per hour or 3300 people per hour, during peak hours.
  • HOV lanes carry approximately 331,000 vehicles or 780,000 people per day.
