Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation Gardens celebrates National Public Gardens Day at all Los Angeles County public gardens on May 6, 2011.  National Public Gardens Day will raise awareness of the important role botanical gardens and arboreta play in promoting environmental stewardship, plant and water conservation, green spaces, and education in local communities nationwide. National Public Garden Day will also provide families, couples, and enthusiasts with the option of fun, beautiful and low-cost entertainment. Sponsored by the American Public Gardens Association (APGA), four Los Angeles County public gardens will offer the following activities:

Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Canada-Flintridge, CA 91011, will offer:

  • Guided tours; cooking demonstrations; nutrition Lessons and
    snacks during Open House in the Harvest Garden, from 9:00 am until 3:00
    pm.
  • The Harvest Garden is an interactive educational garden which
    serves students with special needs.  For more information, contact the

  • Descanso Gardens will offer free admission for two, with coupons
    available from Better Homes and Garden magazine at:
    http://www.publicgardens.org/content/npgd-pass-participants.  If coupons
    are not presented at the entrance, then general garden admission fees
    will apply.

The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, 301 N. Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia, CA  91007, will offer:

  • Two special tours at 10:00 am and at 2:00 p.m., led by botanical
    expert Frank McDonough, exploring the Arboretum’s magnificent collection
    of trees from around the world, along with a discussion about the
    changing role of public gardens in America.

South Coast Botanic Garden, 26300 Crenshaw Boulevard, Palos Verdes, CA 90274 will offer:

  • Docent-guided Environmental Nature Walks.  The tours will take
    visitors into the heart of this unique garden (built atop a sanitary
    landfill), learn about its history and emphasize the importance of the
    plant world for both people and their environment.  Tour group size is
    limited and will meet in the entrance courtyard at 11:00 a.m. and again
    at 1:00 p.m. Availability will be first come first serve.

Virginia Robinson Gardens, 1008 Elden Way, Beverly Hills, CA  90210, will offer:

  • Two special guided tours, at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 .p.m.  Travel
    back in time and explore five distinctive gardens at the historic
    Virginia Robinson Estate and also tour the Main House and Pool Pavilion.
