IN THE SENATE

  1. The Senate convenes at 9:30am.
  2. Following any Leader remarks, the Senate will resume consideration of S.1323, a bill to express the sense of the Senate on shared sacrifice in resolving the budget deficit with one hour of debate equally divided and controlled between the two Leaders or their designees prior to the cloture vote on S.1323.
  3. There will be up to 2 roll call votes at approximately 10:30am Wednesday.  The first roll call vote will be on the motion to invoke cloture on S.1323, the sense of the Senate bill on shared sacrifice in resolving the budget deficit.  If cloture is not invoked, there will be a 2nd roll call vote immediately on the motion to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to H.R.2055, the Military Construction, Veterans’ Affairs and related agencies Appropriations bill. 
  4. Senator calls for investigation of News Corp  -  A senator called for an investigation of News Corp following the telephone hacking scandal at one of its British newspapers, signaling the crisis could spread to the United States. (Reuters)

  4. House GOP fails to turn off new standards for light bulbs that some see as issue of freedom  -  House Republicans on Tuesday failed to stop the enactment of new energy-saving standards for light bulbs they portrayed as yet another example of big government interfering in people’s lives. (Washington Post) 
  5. Giuliani, considering another run, makes ‘important’ New Hampshire trip this week  -  Still flirting with another presidential run, Rudolph W. Giuliani is scheduled to make what an aide calls an “important trip” to New Hampshire aimed as much at convincing the former New York mayor to run as convincing the state’s voters that he’s the Republican with the best chance to win in 2012. FEDERAL GRANT OF THE DAY

  • Charter Schools Program (CSP) Grants for Replication and Expansion of High-Quality Charter Schools The purpose of the CSP is to increase national understanding of the charter school model and to expand the number of high-quality charter schools available to students across the Nation by providing financial assistance for the planning, program design, initial implementation, and expansion of charter schools; and to evaluate the effects of charter schools, including their effects on students, student academic achievement, staff, and parents. The purpose of this competition is to award grants to eligible applicants to enable them to replicate or expand high-quality charter schools with demonstrated records of success, including success in increasing student academic achievement. Eligible applicants may use their CSP funds to expand the enrollment of one or more existing charter schools by substantially increasing the number of available seatsper school, or to open one or more new charter schools that are based on the charter school model for which the eligible applicant has presented evidence of success.  For more information, see initial grant announcement.

  •  July 13, 1923 On this day, the Hollywood Sign is officially dedicated in the hills above Hollywood.  It originally reads “Hollywoodland ,”but the four last letters are dropped after renovation in 1949.
