Arguably, the United States of America is experiencing, under the Barack Obama presidency some of the most radical changes in its 235 year history. Following World War I, America turned away from its traditions and elected what most historians have referred to as the worst president in American history: Warren G. Harding. During his brief tenure as president, Harding was a deer in the headlights from day one. Corruption pocked-marked his Administration. His appointees and underlings raided the Treasury like a personal piggy bank. Mercifully, Harding passed away in Office in 1923.
Inheriting the role of president was his little-known Vice-President, New Englander Calvin Coolidge aka “Silent Cal.” The taciturn Coolidge said little that distinguished himself during his term as VP. At a Washington party, a socialite approached newly sworn-in President Coolidge and said she wagered a bet that she could prompt the laconic president to say more than two words. His rye response: “You lose.”
Coolidge did make a statement that profoundly affected the United States economy. He said, “The Business of America is Business.” His Administration placed into practice that prophetic utterance.
The Coolidge Administration (1923-29) was noted for the following:
- Reduce Government Expenditures. All surpluses were directed to pay down the national debt.
- Reduced the National Debt by 25% substantially paying off WWI costs.
- Lessen Government Regulations of corporations.
- Promote subsidies for industry and protect American business with high tariffs (taxes on imported products).
- Cut taxes.
- Vetoed 50 liberal spending bills from a coalition of Democrats and progressive Republicans (RINOs).
- Cut income taxes. Only the highest 2% paid any income taxes.
- Fueled a boom investing in the Stock Market.
Indeed Calvin Coolidge was low profile. He said little but did much to enhance our great country.
Barack Obama could learn a great deal from the Coolidge Presidency.
As Obama laments that he awakens every morning and goes to sleep every night with one thought on his brain: Fix the economy and find jobs for Americans. I am disappointed by the president’s empty rhetoric and complete lack of action. I am saddened that we as country elected such a shameful, pathetic ideologue who harbors seething resentment against the very country that brought him up into national prominence. Noted National commentator Charles Krauthammer warned America to observe not what Obama says but to watch what he does.” True!
I would respectfully remind our 44th president to study American history and following the example of John Calvin Coolidge: Say little and read the above… Then follow it!
Take back America 2012!
