- Taxpayers foot bill for Hill harassment claims- The number of discrimination and harassment claims on Capitol Hill has doubled in the past five years – and taxpayers have shelled out hundreds of thousands of dollars to settle those disputes. Politico
In the Senate:
- The Senate is not in session.
- Sens. Lieberman, Coburn press for big supercommittee cuts to Medicare – Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CN) and Tom Coburn (R-OK) are pressing the deficit-reduction supercommittee to consider their proposal to cut more than $500 billion in Medicare spending over 10 years. The Hill

- Some in GOP see negatives in Christie’s record – As the buzz grows over the possibility of Chris Christie jumping into the Republican presidential race, some conservative skeptics say the New Jersey governor — like Rick Perry and Mitt Romney before him — has a record of comments, appointments and positions that many in the GOP rank-and-file will find difficult to swallow. - Hispanics Rise in Key States – The surging Hispanic population in several states that figure to be crucial to the outcome of next year’s election is prompting an early scramble by both parties to influence Hispanic voters. WSJ
- U.S. Backs New Loans for Projects on Energy – As the federal fiscal year ends, and with it the part of the stimulus program that finances some energy loans, the Energy Department issued $1.07 billion in loan guarantees on Wednesday afternoon, for two solar energy production plants, and on Thursday it plans to announce $156 million in grants for high-risk but potentially high-reward research projects. - Obama’s speech to high school also a subtle jobs bill pitch – As Obama delivered his annual back-to-school address at a District of Columbia public high school, Obama told students he was trying to upgrade school buildings and fortify the ranks of classroom teachers — two key elements of his proposed jobs bill.
