Providence Holy Cross Medical Center told Santa Clarita officials in a letter received Monday that it plans to buy 30 to 35 acres to build a hospital in Santa Clarita.

In a two-page letter dated June 22, the hospital’s administrator laid out the goals reports Judy O’Rourke for the Daily News.

“Providence Health & Services has financial capacity to execute immediately on planning and building a second health care facility in Santa Clarita,” said Kerry Carmody, administrator for Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in the letter. “To meet the growing need of the community, it is critical that we begin planning today.”

Such projects need at least six to eight years’ lead time, including two for state approvals and three years for construction.

Carmody notes that recent studies by outside consultants agree with the organization’s in-house report that an additional 150 to 200 beds for a hospital and emergency room will be needed to serve a population that is growing by up to 9 percent annually.
