All of the agencies; Los Angeles County Fire, Los Angeles County Sheriff, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, his staff and all the County agencies, the City of Santa Clarita, the State and Federal Government have done an outstanding job so far in dealing with these fires. Here is the latest status report on the area fires from the County of Los Angeles Office of Emergency Management as of 11:00 AM this morning.
“Meadow Ridge Fire”: Santa Clarita
- Fire started at 0408 hours, at San Fernando Road and Meadow Ridge Drive.
- No injuries.
- Approximately five to 10 acres burned.
- No structures are threatened, and no evacuations have been declared.
- No road closures.
“Magic Fire”: Stevenson Ranch
Approximately 1,500 acres burned.
Mandatory evacuations have been declared for Mallory Drive and Waycott Way.
There have been no injuries.
Containment: 40%.
No structures have been damaged or destroyed.
Personnel: 250 fire personnel, 17 engines, four camp crews and two helicopters.
According to the California Highway Patrol, all roads west of the Old Road into Stevenson Ranch/Westridge are open.
Cause: Has been determined as accidental, caused by construction workers welding.
“Canyon Fire”: Malibu
- Injuries: three firefighters. Level of injury: minor.
- 4, 400 acres burned.
- Destroyed: six single-family dwellings, one church, and one commercial trailer.
- Damaged: nine single-family dwellings, five businesses.
- Containment: 15%.
- Personnel: 898 fire department personnel.
- Mandatory evacuations for the following communities: Montenido, Malibu Road, Puerto Canyon, Monte Vista Drive, Piuma, Schueren Road, Las Flores Canyon, Powder Horn Ranch Road, Malibu Colony, Sweetwater Canyon, Carbon Canyon, Big Rock, Carbon Mesa, Rambla Pacifica and Saddlepeak Road to Pacific Coast Hghway and Tuna Canyon.
- Road closures: Northbound Pacific Coast Highway at Topanga Canyon, Southbound Pacific Coast Highway at Kanan Road, Topanga Canyon between Pacific Coast Highway and Mulholland Drive, Southbound Las Virgenes Road at Mulland Drive, Malibu Canyon at Civic Center Way, Northbound Pacific Coast Highway at Big Rock, Southbound Las Flores at Rambla Pacifica, Carbon Canyon at Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu Canyon Road at Piuma, Northbound Kanan Road at Pacific Coast Highway, Mulholland Drive at Stunt Road, Stunt Road at Shueren Road, Tuna Canyon at Saddle Peak, Mulholland Drive and Cold Canyon, and Old Topanga Road at Mulholland Drive.
- Cause: under investigation, however the fire may have been caused by downed power lines.
“Buckweed Fire”: Agua Dulce/Canyon Country area
- Injuries: five total: two firefighters, three civilians. Condition: unknown. Level of injury: unknown.
- 37,812 acres burned.
- Destroyed: 32 structures, including 15 single-family dwellings and 15 outbuildings. 40 vehicles and two tractors have been destroyed. One wooded bridge at Vasquez Canyon and Bouquet Canyon Road has been destroyed.
- Containment: 27%.
- Personnel: 1,200 fire department personnel.
- 5,500 homes were threatened.15,000 people were evacuated.
- None of the mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted.
- San Francisquito Canyon has re-opened to those with proof of residence only in both directions at Copper Hill, Lowridge and Spunky Canyon.
- Road closures include Bouquet Canyon and Spunky Canyon, Bouquet Canyon and David Way, Bouquet Canyon and Vasquez Canyon, Vasquez Canyon east of Bouquet Canyon, Aqua Dulce and Sierra Highway, Sierra Highway and Vasquez Canyon, Whites Canyon and Steinway, Whites Canyon at Stillmore, Camp Plenty at Soledad, North-bound Whites Canyon at Soledad, Halsey Canyon Road between Commerce Center and Del Valle, and State Route-126 between Chiquito Canyon Road and Main Street in Piru.
- Cause: undetermined.
“Ranch Fire”: Ventura County
- Under USDA Forest Service jurisdiction, with assistance from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

- Road closures: Northbound Chiquito Canyon Road from State Route 126, Hasley Canyon at Commerce Center, Hasley Canyon at Del Valle Road, Eastbound State Route 126 from Avenue A in Fillmore to Westbound State Route 126 at Chiquito Canyon, and Pico Canyon at Stevenson Ranch.
The Los Angeles County Health Officer is recommending that, due to the continued unhealthy air throughout the County, it is advised that schools discontinue outside physical activities, including after school sports until conditions improve. It is also recommended that all residents avoid non-essential prolonged outdoor vigorous physical activity.
