(From the AP) State elections officials say Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley has built a slim lead in the race for California attorney general. In numbers released Saturday by the California secretary of state’s office, Cooley now leads San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris by 22,817 votes.
With a little more than 7 million votes counted, Cooley’s lead comes to three-tenths of a percentage point over Harris.
The race between the two prosecutors could remain too close to call for several weeks. The secretary of state’s office said Friday that more than 2.3 million late or provisional ballots must be counted before the end of the month.
The 63-year-old Cooley has been Los Angeles’ top prosecutor since 2000, while the 46-year-old Harris was elected San Francisco district attorney in 2003.
