The City of Santa Clarita is currently conducting its annual Overlay and Slurry Seal project. The 2008-09 program, which began in early July and is expected to continue through October, provides for a smoother ride for traffic, enhances the appearance of roadways and surrounding area, and extends the life of local roadways.

Local streets are annually evaluated and identified for their need for asphalt maintenance treatments. Those found eligible for maintenance are included in the annual Overlay and Slurry Seal Project. Signs are posted in affected project areas three days prior to construction to alert residents in advance.

“The Overlay and Slurry Seal project is an integral part of the City’s pavement management program,” said a City Official. “The project is an investment in our roadways and maintains the overall aesthetics of the City as a whole.”

Surface sealing, root and tree branch removal, and the installation of a root barrier is scheduled to begin on the Bicycle Trail parallel to Soledad Canyon Road from Camp Plenty Road to Golden Oak Road in the beginning of August. Sidewalk detours will be provided and cyclists are encouraged to walk bikes on the detour or choose an alternate route during construction.

The 2008-09 Project also includes an overlay and restriping on 16th Street between Orchard Village Road and Newhall Avenue in Downtown Newhall, tentatively scheduled for completion in August. The 16th Street project also involves constructing new handicapped access ramps and bulb-outs at the intersection of 16th Street and Newhall Avenue. Another street overlay set for completion in August is underway in the neighborhood adjacent to 16th Street in the Newhall area on Avenida Ignacio, Dalby Drive, Tristin Drive, Via Hispano, Via Gayo, Via Farallon, Via Elisandra, Avenida Balida and Via Calisero.

An overlay and new striping pattern will be completed on Rockwell Canyon Road from McBean Parkway to Valencia Boulevard. As the street is directly adjacent to the College of the Canyons, all work will be completed before the College’s Fall Session begins.

Residential streets selected for the annual Overlay and Slurry Seal project include the portion of Green Mountain Drive south of Golden Valley Road, and adjacent streets, including Crystal Springs Court, Goldstream Way, Mountain Pass Road and Oakbar Court in the Canyon Country neighborhood area. Construction is currently underway and scheduled for completion mid-August. A road overlay and restriping on Decoro Drive from McBean Parkway to Vista Delgado is set for completion in mid-August.

The residential area located between Calgrove and Wiley Canyon Road will receive curb and gutter replacement, grinding and overlay, scheduled for completion in mid-August. An overlay project will also be conducted in the residential area between Decoro Drive and Garzota Drive, including Rio Garza, Rio Prada, Rio Pecos, Rio Bosque and Rio Chico.

A night-time overlay project will be conducted on the east-bound side of Valencia Boulevard from the I-5 freeway to McBean Parkway at the end of August. All construction on the project will be conducted at night to avoid disrupting the flow of day-time traffic, and the City will send out reminder notices 14 days prior to construction to remind area residents of upcoming night-time noise. The Valencia Boulevard project is scheduled for completion on September 22nd.
